Ayesha Usman | Labbaik Here I Am

I am a visual artist and calligrapher of South Asian heritage, originally from Pakistan and now based in Canada. I hold a Master’s degree in Painting from the University of the Punjab, Pakistan, and moved to Canada with my family in 2014. My passion for art began at an early age and has developed into more than two decades of practice in calligraphy and visual art.
My work approaches calligraphy not simply as a decorative element, but as a living visual language shaped by rhythm, movement, and intention. My connection to Qur’anic language and stories brings together faith, cultural identity, memory, and artistic expression. Rooted in contemporary mixed-media practice, I work with vibrant colors, texture, layered surfaces, and expressive marks. I build each piece gradually, allowing layers to reveal emotions, memories, and connections over time. Through my work, I seek to balance aesthetic beauty with conceptual depth and invite viewers into a dialogue with the stories and meanings within each piece.

 

My practice explores the relationship between layers, space, memory, faith, identity, and the written word, drawing from my experience as a visual artist and calligrapher. I build my work through layers of color, texture, gesture, and mark, allowing traces of what came before to
remain visible. This process creates depth and movement while reflecting the way memories, experiences, and beliefs accumulate and shape our sense of self and belonging.
Calligraphy is central to my visual language. I approach it not simply as a decorative element, but as a living and expressive form of art. I am interested in the rhythm, movement, beauty, and emotional quality of written forms, as much as their literal meaning. Letters, words, and
symbols may remain recognizable or become abstracted, creating a space where language and image intersect.

My connection to Qur’anic language and stories is an important part of my artistic practice. Faith provides both a source of inspiration and a framework through which I explore questions of identity, direction, memory, and belonging. Having grown up in Pakistan and later moved to Canada, I have experienced home as something that can exist simultaneously in a physical place, in memory, in culture, and within one's faith. This experience continues to influence how I understand and create art. I work primarily through contemporary mixed-media exploration, combining vibrant color, texture, layered surfaces, and calligraphic forms. Each layer is built gradually and intentionally, allowing the surface to retain traces of the creative process. For me, these layers reflect the complexity of human experience—what we inherit, what we carry, what we leave behind, and what we continue to build. Through my work, I seek to balance aesthetic beauty with conceptual depth, creating spaces for reflection and dialogue. I invite viewers to bring their own memories, beliefs, and experiences
to the work and consider where home resides, what guides us, and how faith shapes our sense of belonging.
