Zunaira Mufti | Bazaar Chronicles: Memoirs from Empress Market
Rooted in Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage, Zunaira Mufti is a Canadian-based multidisciplinary architect and artist whose practice brings together architecture, symbolism, spirituality, and storytelling. Her artistic journey is shaped by her cultural roots, architectural training, and a deep connection to memory, nature, and the traditions that have influenced her understanding of identity and belonging. Through layered imagery and symbolic narratives, her work explores heritage, spirituality, identity, and the enduring connections that transcend time, place, and generations. Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media, Zunaira draws inspiration from Islamic art and architecture, cultural traditions, poetry, nature, and the intricate patterns of her heritage. Her architectural paintings seek to preserve the beauty and stories of places that hold cultural and historical significance, particularly the architectural brilliance of the world. Through her work, she documents not only buildings and spaces, but also the traditions, memories, craftsmanship, and stories woven into them, creating a visual record of heritage for future generations.
Her paintings often combine architectural elements, organic forms, intricate details, and symbolism to create contemplative spaces where past and present intersect. She is deeply interested in how art can become a vessel for cultural memory: preserving what may be lost, reconnecting people with their roots, and inviting viewers to pause
and reflect on the stories carried through generations.
Alongside her studio practice, Zunaira is an art educator and community arts advocate with more than 15 years of experience teaching at the FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton. She is a member of the Fine Arts Society of Milton and the founder of ZDot Design Studio. In 2024, she co-founded The Artist Cube, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting Muslim artists and creating opportunities for diverse cultural voices through the arts.
Through her artistic and community practice, Zunaira seeks to create meaningful connections between cultures, generations, and lived experiences. Her work is both a celebration and preservation of heritage, honouring the beauty of the past while reimagining its stories through a contemporary artistic lens.
A vibrant tribute to Karachi’s iconic Empress Market, this painting celebrates the historic bazaars of the Islamic world as living expressions of cultural heritage, community and belonging. Through intricate architecture, vivid colours and the bustling rhythms of market life, the work evokes the aromas, traditions and human stories woven into these timeless spaces.
More than a collection of stone and brick, Empress Market holds the memories, emotions and lived experiences of generations who have gathered, worked and built their lives within its walls. Deeply connected to Karachi’s cultural identity, it stands as a living testament to the city’s enduring spirit, where architecture and everyday life intertwine to preserve the stories of a place and its people.
