Mahwish Sarfaraz Zahid | The Geometry of Belonging

Mahwish Zahid is a contemporary artist whose work explores the intersection of faith, heritage, geometry, and visual expression. Inspired by Islamic geometric patterns, Persian art, and the beauty of repetition and symmetry, she creates vibrant, contemporary compositions rooted in cultural tradition. Working across acrylic, watercolor, textured mediums, and mixed media, Mahwish uses color, layering, and intricate detail to invite viewers to pause, reflect, and discover beauty within structure. Colors of Faith and Home For me, art is a way of remembering where we come from while expressing who we are today. My work is inspired by the visual language of Islamic art; the rhythm of geometric patterns, the harmony of symmetry, the richness of color, and the beauty found in intricate details. I am especially drawn to Islamic geometry because it represents more than decoration. Built through the careful use of circles, lines, symmetry, and repeating forms, these patterns create a sense of order while allowing for endless variation. Their repetition and interconnections suggest balance, infinity, and the unity of creation, ideas that resonate deeply with my understanding of faith. Through these patterns, I explore how mathematics, spirituality, and artistic expression can come together to create a visual language that feels both structured and alive. “Colors of Faith and Home” explores our emotional relationship with heritage. Home is not always a specific place; it can be found in familiar patterns, meaningful colors, inherited traditions, and the faith that grounds us wherever life takes us. Living away from the places and traditions that shaped us can transform our understanding of
home. Through colors, pattern, texture, and contemporary interpretation, I explore how heritage travels with us, evolving while remaining connected to its roots. My paintings are both a celebration and a conversation: a celebration of Islamic artistic traditions and a dialogue between past and present, heritage and contemporary life, and the places we call home and the homes we carry within us.
I hope viewers experience more than colors and pattern. I hope they feel familiarity, peace, wonder, and belonging; and perhaps discover a reflection of their own understanding of faith and home. Through my art, I celebrate a heritage that continues to inspire, connect, and feel like home.
