Nafisa Sayed-Motiwala | Dhikr
Dr. Nafisa Sayed-Motiwala is a Canadian visual artist whose practice bridges traditional Islamic heritage with contemporary visual expression. Drawing deep inspiration from biomorphic forms, classical Tezhib (illumination), and Mughal architectural motifs like the intricate marble inlays of the Taj Mahal, her work explores the harmony between
sacred geometry, nature, and faith. Historically grounded in traditional techniques, her current practice incorporates vibrant watercolors alongside heavy impasto acrylics to create multi-sensory experiences. Nafisa is driven by the power of art to tell stories of cultural identity, spiritual balance, and environmental connection. Through her ongoing
explorations, she captures the quiet rhythm of the natural world, transforming heritage motifs into dynamic contemporary visual narratives that celebrate the richness of Islamic artistic history.
Dhikr explores the spiritual act of remembrance through the intimate imagery of prayer, beads, and the human hand. The gently clasped hands and tasbih suggest a quiet moment of reflection, devotion, and connection with the Divine. Watercolour allows me to express this contemplative atmosphere through translucent washes, soft textures, and subtle movement. The earthy tones of the hands contrast with the cool, atmospheric background, creating a sense of stillness while suggesting the passage between the physical and spiritual worlds. Through this work, I reflect on how repetitive prayer can become both a personal meditation and a source of inner peace, gratitude, and hope.
