Nafisa Sayed-Motiwala | Noor
Dr. Nafisa Sayed-Motiwala is a Canadian visual artist whose practice bridges traditional Islamic heritage with contemporary visual expression. Drawing deep inspiration from biomorphic forms, classical Tezhib (illumination), and Mughal architectural motifs like the intricate marble inlays of the Taj Mahal, her work explores the harmony between
sacred geometry, nature, and faith. Historically grounded in traditional techniques, her current practice incorporates vibrant watercolors alongside heavy impasto acrylics to create multi-sensory experiences. Nafisa is driven by the power of art to tell stories of cultural identity, spiritual balance, and environmental connection. Through her ongoing
explorations, she captures the quiet rhythm of the natural world, transforming heritage motifs into dynamic contemporary visual narratives that celebrate the richness of Islamic artistic history.
Noor (Light) explores illumination, warmth, and spiritual solace through the fluid medium of watercolor. Anchoring the piece is a traditional lantern (fanous), intricately detailed in metallic gold and dark linework, radiating a bright, central glow. In Arabic, Noor signifies both physical light and divine guidance or hope. Surrounding the lantern, expressive washes of golden yellows, terracotta, and deep blues evoke subtle architectural silhouettes of domes and arches, capturing the peaceful transition between dusk and dawn. The translucent layers of paint mimic the permeable quality of light itself—soft yet transformative. Noor serves as a visual invitation to pause, seek warmth in stillness, and remember the enduring light that guides us through moments of obscurity.
