Nimra Khan | The Colours of Home
Nimra Khan is an emerging Canadian artist whose work explores memory, culture, and the stories held within everyday moments. Born in Pakistan and raised in Canada after immigrating as a child, she has developed a cross-cultural identity that continues to shape her artistic perspective. Her work often reflects the meeting of old and new, where tradition exists alongside modern life. Working primarily in oil and acrylic, Nimra has also explored watercolour and digital art. Her earliest artistic practice centred on illustration, particularly ink drawing, which continues to influence the way she composes her paintings and builds visual narratives.Although her choice of medium has evolved, storytelling remains at the heart of her work.
Inspired by family, faith, cultural traditions, nature, and the idea of home, Nimra creates art that invites viewers to reflect on the experiences that shape their own sense of identity and belonging. Alongside her professional life, she continues to develop her artistic practice and is excited to create a more meaningful place for art within her life. This painting explores the ways comfort, faith, and culture intersect within the home.Through open windows and balconies, we catch glimpses of everyday life—people talking, sharing meals, and praying—while closed doors preserve the privacy and intimacy of home. The building is inspired by traditional homes in Karachi, with weathered shutters and traces of once-bright blues, pinks, greens, and yellows. During my visits to Pakistan, buildings like these stayed with me because of their distinctive character and the lively inner worlds I imagined existing behind their aging façades. The minaret rising in the background is a more visible reference to faith—an enduring presence that quietly surrounds everyday life and reminds me of home. The building itself is intentionally crooked, suggesting the passage of time and the gradual loss of a way of life in which generations lived together under one roof. Its bright colours represent the richness and vitality of the lives within, even as the structure becomes weathered and uneven. Through this work, I invite viewers to consider the elements of family, culture, and faith woven into their own routines, and the everyday traditions that bring them comfort and a sense of belonging.
