Shazia Naseem | The Portal of Belonging

Shazia is a self-taught artist inspired by Islamic culture, sacred architecture, and Quranic calligraphy. Her journey began with an admiration for Arabic script and grew into a spiritual practice, where each stroke reflects remembrance of the Divine. Influenced by Sufi thought, she seeks to capture presence and meaning in her work. By layering line, color, and texture, Shazia transforms calligraphy into living forms that celebrate faith and Islamic heritage.

It began with precise measurements, careful calculations, and the patient rendering of countless intricate details. But somewhere along the way, this stopped being simply a painting. I found myself returning to it each day, not only to paint, but to connect. Inspired by the magnificent Mughal architecture of Masjid Khudabad in Dadu Sindh, Pakistan, this portal carries the traces of a heritage shaped by craftsmanship, faith, and time. Although years of neglect have softened some of its original beauty, its intricate details and enduring architecture continue to tell a powerful story. For me, recreating this doorway became deeply personal. As I traced each form and built each layer, it felt as though the painting and I were sharing a quiet conversation, following the same story: a story of home, belonging, and roots.

Every brushstroke became a way of tracing the footsteps of generations before me. The portal became more than an architectural detail. It became a threshold between past and present, memory and place, heritage and identity. The Portal of Belonging is my way of returning home, one brushstroke at a time.
