This series reveals a generational disconnect and cultural guilt tied to language loss, stemming from personal experiences of struggling to connect with native Urdu-speaking family members. Using language and text in relation to image production, this series is referencing a history of loss and the subtle erasure of a language. As words become muddled, gaps grow larger and understandings slip into misunderstandings. The compositions are densely packed landscapes filled with letters in calligraphic script as a signifier of the Urdu language. These forms, rooted in linguistic tradition, transcend their original purpose and evolve into visual symbols, far removed from meaning. These forms are open to interpretation and understanding or even misunderstanding. The words break into individual letters, each becoming an indexical sign of language, tradition, and cultural heritage. Unconventional in its approach, this series pays homage to traditional calligraphic practices while recontextualizing them into a language of visual memory.
