Tasneem Zahida | Reflection of Faith
Tasneem Zahida was born in Pakistan, raised in the Middle East, and is now settled in Canada. She is a contemporary landscape artist whose work is distinguished by a sensitive approach to light, atmosphere, colour, and composition, transforming familiar environments into spaces of reflection and meaning. In addition to landscapes, Tasneem is also a calligrapher. She has studied Arabic calligraphy at various institutes in the Middle East. Alongside her studio practice, Zahida teaches art to youth and adult learners, encouraging a strong technical foundation in both art and calligraphy while helping them develop their individual artistic voices.
Reflection of Faith explores the quiet presence of spirituality within everyday life. The painting depicts the domestic interior of a typical Canadian home, focusing on a prayer mat and a large mirror whose reflection opens the room into a warm, arched architectural space. This reflected interior closely resembles my previous home in the Middle East, with similar tiles, wall colours, arches, and stairs. Through this contrast, I wanted to suggest that faith is not separate from ordinary experience, but rather something that can shape the world around us. The composition moves between interior and exterior, warmth and cold, physical space and reflected space. The prayer mat becomes the visual and symbolic anchor between these environments, representing a personal place of return. The mirror is especially important to the work. Rather than functioning only as an object within the room, it becomes a passage between the present and the inner experience. I hope viewers experience the painting as a moment of calm and contemplation while bringing their own understanding of reflection, belonging, and spiritual connection to the work.
